Do I Need a Permit to Build a Fence in Nanaimo?

If you’re planning to build a new fence in Nanaimo, one of the first questions you may have is whether you need a building permit.
The good news is that most residential fences in Nanaimo do not require a building permit. However, your fence must still comply with the City’s zoning regulations regarding height, location, and visibility.
When is a permit required?
For a typical residential fence, a building permit is generally not required.
However, if your project includes a retaining wall, different rules may apply. In many cases, retaining walls over approximately 4 feet (1.2 metres) in height require a building permit and may also require engineered drawings.
Maximum Fence Heights in Nanaimo
The City of Nanaimo has different height limits depending on where the fence is located on your property.
As a general guide:
- Front yard fences are typically limited to 1.2 metres (4 feet).
- Side and rear yard fences can generally be up to 2.4 metres (8 feet).
If your property is on a corner lot or has unusual site conditions, additional restrictions may apply to maintain visibility for pedestrians and drivers.
Before You Build
Before installing any fence, we recommend taking a few simple steps:
- Confirm your property lines.
- Check for utility easements or rights-of-way.
- Contact BC 1 Call before digging.
- Review the City’s fence regulations.
- Talk with your neighbour if the fence will be located on the shared property line.
These steps can help prevent costly mistakes and disputes later.
